Animal Welfare

The Humane Rescue Alliance works to protect animals, support families, and advocate for positive change so that all beings can thrive. The Shades of Compassion Foundation is proud to support the Alliance’s Safe Haven program, which helps remove a significant barrier for many people trying to leave abusive relationships. The rates of animal abuse in homes that experience domestic violence is extremely high, and abusers often use the pet as a means of control over their partners. Since domestic violence shelters do not accept animals, this program is available to victims who need free, short-term boarding of their animals while they search for a safe, stable, pet-friendly home. While in HRA’s care, pets receive free vaccines, spay/neuter services, enrichment, and lots of love and cuddles!

In order to protect the safety and privacy of those helped by Safe Haven, none of the pets or individuals served by the program are pictured on this page.  The photos seen here were taken at one of HRA’s free vaccine drives in Southeast Washington DC and on an adoption day.

If you or someone you know needs help or information on domestic violence, please contact the domestic violence hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or go to their website
